Medical transcription needs no introduction. It is one of the highly paid sectors of the BPO industry, but the involvement of the nursing fraternity in the Medical Transcription sector of India is not happening at all.  A vast majority of the nursing fraternity tends to stick to their areas of profession and rarely venture beyond it.  They are not aware of the benefits that Medical Transcription offers either as an alternate profession or as a part time one to supplement their income.

MVM Suma Institute Of Nursing Sciences has introduced Medical Transcription as an optional subject to their students and also commenced the operations of an MT wing that will under take contracts of overseas medical transcription projects to enable their students to earn while they learn.  At present the institute offers a three and a half hear course in general nursing and midwifery and a four year course in B.Sc nursing.  Never before in the History of Nursing Education in India, or as a matter of fact even in the whole of Asia has the concept of Earn while you learn option been given to the nursing students.  MVM SUMA Institute of nursing sciences is the first institute to bring  the “Earn While You Learn” concept into nursing education circle.

The idea behind this is to promote education and encourage students from economically backward and rural areas of Karnataka to take up nursing a profession.  Children from the rural areas of Karnataka shy away from such professional courses as they lack the required qualifications needed to pursue them.  Another factor is the monetary difficulties.

The northeastern states of India, are seeing a spurt of violence as youngsters with a lot of energy and zest, are turning into drug addicts, gangsters and terrorists because their energy and talents could not be chanelized in the right direction.  And the reason is poverty.  These children could not pursue their education due to paucity of funds.  Many of these youngsters would have been  better citizens if they were offered a way out of their rabid environment.

Now speaking of the students from Kerala, most of them too are from economically weaker sections or from fustic backgrounds who have taken loans to complete their nursing education.

So, the Medical Transcription course enables students to start earning right from the 2nd year of their 3 to 4 year courses.  The Medical transcription course is being taught at a very low fee to facilitate this.

The motive of the Board of Trustees behind this noble gesture is to make this dominant and career-oriented course affordable and accessible to the students of the lower strata of the society, especially to the poor students of rural Karnataka, Of course, these courses are open to others also.  But the primary target is the weaker or deprived sections of the society.  By giving them a chance to earn while they learn, enables them to complete their education without being a burden to their family.

Another important factor is that the majority of the students who opt for nursing as a profession are women.  This venture is also aimed at uplifting women of economically backward and rural areas of Karnataka and other states.  By giving them comprehensive education in an income generating study environment will enable them to finance and self support their pursuance of a professional degree.

Says Mrs Mangala Bharathi, one of the Managing Trustees of the MVM Suma Institute of nursing sciences “I became a professional after my marriage and also after becoming a mother.  I know the importance of an independent income to supplement the family kitty”.  She further reiterates “generating a comfortable income ensures a comfortable lifestyle for you and your family”.

The medical transcription course taught here has been structured to enable the students to transcribe discharge summaries, history and physical examination reports, operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic imaging studies, progress notes and referral letters that become a part of the patients permanent files.  This will not be a cumbersome task or a burden to these nursing students as they are familiar with the medical jargon and abbreviations, which are a part of the nursing syllabus.  These students also have a keen understanding of the medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology and treatment assessments that gives them the edge over the candidates from other streams.  A medical transcriptionist should be able to spot mistakes or inconsistencies in  a medical report and correct them.  Their ability to understand and correctly document patient assessments and treatment should be 100% accurate, be3cuase the patients future treatment and their very life depend on it.  The ethical requirement involved in keeping the patients information confidential is also of utmost importance.  Who else know all these better than students of nursing?

Apart from these qualities, a Medical Transcriptionist should have a good command of English Grammar and punctuation skills, and also be well versed in the use of personal computers and word processing software.  Therefore, we have hired the best of professionals in these fields to be a part of our newly formed Medical Transcription course faculty.  Apart form this, the Medical transcriptionists, working in our new MT wing with their years of experience in the industry will be giving on job training to our students in the course of their study.  Once they acquire the required proficiency level they will be absorbed into our medical transcription department as part time, paid employees.  If they wish to continue on a full time basis after the completion of their regular course, they will be welcomed into our fold.

We the managing trustees and staff of the MVM Suma institute of nursing sciences sincerely hope that this pioneer venture of our institute spreads throughout Karnataka and the whole of India so that students from the rural and economically sections of the country, especially from Karnataka can make the best use of it.  We sincerely hope that the government of Karnataka encourages and supports such efforts, so that, all of us together can make the whole of Karnataka and Kannadigas, the numero uno in terms of literacy, professional reliability and prosperity and gradually through us may the whole of India benefit too.

 Jai Hind!
